    Edward Wilhelm MERTEN, born 10 mar 1854, St. Louis, Missouri, son of Herman Heinrich Abraham and Anna Maria Elisabeth (EILERS) MERTEN. Edward died 24 Feb 1921, Carrigan Township, Marion County, Illinois. Edward and Wilhamenia are both buried in the Sandoval Cemetery.
    Edward married Wilhamenia C. "Minnie" WEDEL 20 Apr 1881. She was born 22 Jul 1862, Clinton County, Illinois, daughter of Herman Frederick and Wilhamenia (WHERNHART) WEDEL. Minnie died 12 Feb 1949.
    On 1 Jun 1900, the census shows Edward (46) and Minnie C. (38) MERTEM living in Carrigan Township, Marion County, Illinois. Edward was said to have been born Mar 1854, Missouri and his parents in Germany. Minnie was said to have been born Jul 1861, Illinois and her parents in Germany. Edward was a Merchant. They owned their home free of mortgage. They were said to have been married 19 years and that she had given birth to 8 children with 6 living. With them were their children: Edna C. MERTEM age 18, born Feb 1882, IL; Ralph C. MERTEM age 16, born Oct 1883, IL; Cora MERTEM age 12, born Feb 1888, IL; Harry L. MERTEM age 10, born Feb 1890, IL; Carl H. MERTEM age 8, born Sep 1891, IL; and Orin W. MERTEM age 9 months, born Aug 1899, IL.
    In 1907, Minnie’s mother’s will listed as her heirs: Mary S. ALF, daughter; Wilhelmina MERTEN, daughter; Ellen HENRICH, daugher; Nancy MANN, daughter; Bertie CROOK, daughter; Henrietta HAGEDORN, unknown; and son Frank WEDEL.
    On 15 Apr 1910 the census shows Edward W. (56) and Minnie C. (47) MERTEN living in Carrigan Township, Marion County, Illinois. Edward was said to have been born in Missouri and his parents in Germany. Minnie was said to have been born in Illinois and her parents in Germany. Edward was a farmer. They owned their farm free of mortgage. They were said to have been married 28 yearsand that she had given birth to 8 children with 6 living. With them were their children: Cora MERTEN age 22, born IL; Harry L. MERTEN age 20, born IL; Carl H. MERTEN age 18, born IL and Orin W. MERTEN age 10, born IL.
    In Jan 1920, the census shows Edward (65) and Minnie (57) MERTEN living in Carrigan Township, Marion County, Illinois. He was said to have been born in Missouri and his parents in Germany. Minnie was said to have been born in Illinois and her parents in Germany. Edward was said to have been a farmer. They owned thier home free of mortgage. With them was their son, Orrin MERTEN age 20, born IL. (Note: His son Ralph and family lived next to them.)

3. Lillie Mable MERTEN, born 16 Oct 1885, Clinton or Marion County, Illinois. Lillie died 23 Apr 1893. Buried in Sandoval Cemetery.

4. Cora MERTEN, born 2 Feb 1888, Clinton or Marion County, Illinois.
    Cora married Ben LAUBMAYER.

5. Harry Lester Merten, born 25 Feb 1890, Clinton or Marion County, Illinois. He died 3 May 1934, Rochester, Minnesota.
    Harry married 1st Minnie DECHENE after 1910. They had no children.
    Harry married 2nd Agnes M. HARDER 15 Jun 1920. She was born 1900/01, Germany.
    On 2 Apr 1930, the census shows Harry L. (40) and Agnes M. (29)MERTENS living in Fergus County, Montana. With them were their sons Edward W. age 8; and Harry L. age 6. They were renting their home for $10.00 a month. Harry was a Telegrapher for the Rail Road.

    Edward married Shirley L. MARTIN 14 May 1945. Three children.

    5-2. Harry Lester MERTEN, born 6 Jun 1923, Montana.
    Harry married Dolores GILMORE 24 Dec 1946.
    Harry and Dolores had two children.



6. Carl Henry MERTEN, born 9 Sep 1891, Clinton or Marion County, Illinois. Carl died Nov 1974.
    Carl married Agnes KARR 1 Oct 1914.

    6-1. Mary Marjorie MERTEN, born 30 Aug 1915.

    6-2. Dorothy Fay MERTEN, born 25 May 1920.

7. Orrin Wendell MERTEN, born29 Aug 1899, Clinton or Marion County, Illinois.
    Orrin married Edna ROFFMANN 10 Jun 1924. She was born 8 Feb 1903, Illinois, daughter of Charles J. and Mary (DIECKMANN) ROFFMANN. Edna died Nov 1985. Last place of residence was Milwaukee, Milwaukee County Wisconsin.
    On 12 Sep 1918, Orrin's World War 1 Draft Registration Card has, Orrin Wendell MERTEN, age 19, born 29 Aug 1899, living in Sandoval, Marion County, Illinois. He was a farmer employed by E. W. MERTEN. His nearest relative was his father, E. W. MERTEN. Orrin was short and slender with brown eyes and dark hair.
    On 7 Apr 1930, the census shows Orrin (30) and Edna (27) MERTEN living in West Allis, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. He was said to have been born in Illinois, his father in United States and mother in Illinois. Edna was said to have been born in Illinois, her father in Germany and mother in Missouri. Orrin was a Machinist for the Railroad. He was not a veteran. They were renting their home at $25 a month. They owned a radio.

    Edna married Frank Harold HARKER 19 Dec 1906. He was born 21 Nov 1878, Milford, Ohio, son of Charles P. and Laura (CHANEY) HARKER. He died 9 Jul 1973.
    On 26 Apr 1910, the census shows Frank H. (31) and Edna C. (28) HARKER living in Carrigan Township, Marion County, Illinois. Frank was said to have been born in Ohio, his father in New Jersey and mother in Ohio. Edna was said to have been born in Illinois, her father in Missouri and mother in Illinois. Frank was a farmer. They were said to have been married 3 years and that she had given birth to 1 child with 1 living. With them was their daughter, Viola F. HARKER age 3 months. (Note: They were living with Frank's widowed father, Charles P. HARKER age 80, born NJ; and Frank's sister Blanche HARKER age 35, born OH.)

    In Jan 1920, the census shows Frank H. (41) and Edna (37) HARKER living in Carrigan Township, Marion County, Illinois. He was said to have been born in Ohio and his parents in New Jersey. Edna was said to have been born in Illinois and her parents in Missouri. Frank was a farmer. They were renting their home. They owned their home. He was not a veteran. With them were their children: N. Wayne HARKER age 19, born IL; J. Carol HARKER age 14, born IL; L. Dale HARKER age 11, born IL.
    In 1942, Frank's World War 2 Draft Registration Card has, Frank Harold HARKER age 63, born 21 Nov 1878, Milford, Ohio. He was a farmer and lived in rural route 2, Odin, Marion County, Illinois. Mrs. Viola HICKS, also of rural Odin, was listed as his contact person.
    Edna was a member of the Sandoval United Methodist Church.

1-1. Viola Frances HARKER, born 9 Jan 1910, Tonti Township, Marion County, Illinois. She died 3 Feb 1997, Centralia, Marion County, Illinois. She is buried at Peaceful Valley Cemetery in Odin, Illinois.
    Viola married Glen HICKS, 8 May 1932, Centralia, Marion County, Illinois.
    Viola was a rural school teacher in the Odin area. She taught piano for 25 years. She lived in the Odin/Sandoval area her whole life. She was a member of the Sandoval United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and served as pianist for over 30 years. She was president of the ladies group of Marion County Farm Bureau and president of Sandoval PTA. She also belonged to the Odin Brick Get Together Club.

    1-1-1. Lewis HICKS, Married Peggy ___?___.
    She lives in Silver Spring, Maryland.

    1-1-2. Dale HICKS, Married Claudia ___?___.
    He lives in St. Paul Minnesota.

    They live in Sterling, Illinois.

    1-1-4. Blanche HICKS, Married Wendell DUGAN.
    They live in Effingham, Illinois.

    1-1-5. Bernice HICKS, Married Dean RILEY.
    They live in Dix, Illinois.

    They lived in Decatur, Illinois. They had two children.

1-4. Dale Leon HARKER, born 19 Oct 1918.
    He married Frances KELLEY 25 Aug 1940.
    They lived in Bonita, California and later Ourya, Colorado.
    They had two children.

    Cora married Ben LAUBMAYER 19 Jan 1913. He was born 14 Jul 1887, Carrigan Township, Marion County, Illinois, son of Conrad and Mary Anetta (REVENAUGH) LAUBMAYER. Ben died 2 Mar 1949, San Diego County, California at the age of 61. Conrad and his two brothers and sister were orphans in 1860, living with another family in Chicago.
    On 5 Jun 1917, the World War 1 Draft Registration Card has, Benjamin Leroy LAUBMAYER age 29, born 14 Jul 1887, Odin, Marion County, Illinois. He was living in San Diego County, California. He was a self-employed farmer in Sunnyside, California. He was supporting a wife and one child. He was a member of Friends Church. He was medium height and stout. He had brown eyes and hair.
    On 5 Jan 1920, the census shows Benj. L. (32) and Cora (31) LAUBMAYER living in Bonita, San Diego Township, San Diego County, California. He was said to have been born in Illinois, his father in Illinois and mother in Ohio. Cora and her parents were said to have been born in Illinois. Benj was a Farm Laborer.
