Herman married Anna Maria Elisabeth "Mary" EILERS 4 Mar 1851, St. Peters German Evangelical Church, St. Louis, Missouri. (She was Catholic and he was not, so they married in a Protestant Church.) With them were their children Edward age 16; Emily age 14; Gustavus age 11; Caroline age 9; George age 7; and Herman age 3. Herman was listed as a farmer. His real estate was valued at $450.00.     On 16 Jun 1900, the census shows Herman (72) and Mary A. (68) MERTEN living in Central Township, Franklin County, Missouri. With them was their daughter Clara G. age 22, born Jul 1877 (Note: family records state that she was born 15 May 1874. SF). Herman was listed as a farmer. The census showed that Herman owned his own farm. It also showed that he had not worked in the last 12 months.
