Joseph HANKE, Esq, born 30 Jan 1820, Aussig, Bohemia (now Ústí nad Labem, Czech Republic). He died after 11 Jun 1900 and before 20 Apr 1910, Trenton, Clinton County, Illinois.
    Joseph married 1st Catharine WEBER 1860. She was born 1814/15, Switzerland. She died 1875, Trenton Clinton County, Illinois.
    Joseph married 2nd Elizabeth KUPFERLE 27 Sep 1877, Clinton County, Illinois. Elizabeth was born was born 24 Jan 1859, St. Louis, Missouri, daughter of Charles L. and Elizabeth (FAUTH) KUPFERLE. Elizabeth died 16 Feb 1924, St. Louis, Missouri, age of 65 years and 22 days. She died from diabetes. Death Certificate: File #6043. Erwin J. HANKE was the informant for the death certificate. Burial in Trenton, Clinton County, Illinois.
    From the age of 6 to 12, Joseph attended school.
    In 1834, Joseph, at the age of 14, he was apprenticed to the mercantile business in Aussig, Bohemia. He was employed for several years as a clerk and after saving enough money, he opened his own business in Warnsdorf, Bohemia, a village near the border to Saxony, Germany.
    In 1850, Joseph immigrated to the United States of America, arriving in New York on the 30th of June. He began working on a farm on Long Island, in order to learn the English language, but after a few weeks, left and went to Rochester, spending 3 weeks there. He then went to Chicago and then by canal went to La Salle and from there by boat to St. Louis, Missouri, where he was in a hospital for a few weeks from an illness. After recovering from his illness, he went to work for a farmer in the bottomlands for 50 cents a day, but after a few weeks, he left, bought a horse and wagon and purchase a stock of goods, which he sold throughout St. Claire and Clinton Counties. During the winter of 1850-51, he made his home on the prairie on the old Vincennes and St. Louis road (which is now old highway 50). This was about a mile west of the present day Village of Trenton. He kept a stock of goods there for sale. He lost money at first, but then as the roads were improved and more people began moving to and through the area, he began to make a profit.
    On 10 Sep 1853, Joseph purchased the following properties, 76.64 acres of Section 5, LOT 2NW 01N 01W 3, at the cost of $2.50 per acres with a total of $191.60; 40 acres of Section 5, NESW 01N 01W 3; 40 acres of Section 5, E2 LOT 1NW 01N 01W; 80 acres of Secton 5, N2SE 05 01N 01W.
    In 1854, Joseph moved to Trenton, which consisted of only a post office and a few houses. The town had not yet been laid out. There he opened a store. Joseph bought and sold several tracts of land the next couple of years, always making a profit.
    On 30 Mar 1855, Joseph purchased 40 acres on Section 9 NWNW 01N 01W 3, at the price of $2.50 per acre, total price of $100.00.
    On 11 Apr 1855, Joseph purchased the following properties, 40 acares of Section 25 SENE 25 01N 02W 3; 40 acres of Section 7 SENE 01N 01W 3; 40 acres of Section 25 SWNE 01N 02W 3.
    In 1855, Joseph laid out an addition to the town of Trenton
    From 1856 to 1858, Joseph farmed two miles southeast of Trenton.
    In 1859, Joseph built his store-house. He also contributed money to bore for coal. It was abandoned after getting down two hundred feet.
    In 1860, Joseph was elected Justice of the Peace and held the office for one term.
    On 14 Sep 1860, the census shows Joseph HANKE age 40 living in Trenton, Clinton County, Illinois. He was said to have been born in Bohemia. Joseph’s real estate was valued at $15,000.00. His personal property valued at $10,000.00. With him was Ferdinand HANKE age 27 said to have been born in Bohemia, and Edward (28) and Josephena (24) MATON (This is Merten) and their son Julius MATON.Edward was said to have been born in Prussia and Jospehena in Bohemia and Julius in Illinois. The whole page seems to be off in it numbering. There was also a Moritz PIRRZEL age 24 said to have been born in Bohemia, and Mary ROLL age 10 said to have been born in Bohemia living with them.
    After Sep 1860, Joseph married Catherine WEBER.
    From 1861 to 1865, Joseph was post master of Trenton.
    In <1863, a company in which Joseph had 1/4 ownership, was formed to open a coal mine
    In 1865, Joseph sold his stock of merchandise. He kept his store-home. He also became Police Magistrate of Trenton in 1860 and held that for over 20 years.
    In 1868, Joseph resumed the mercantile business, which he then continued to do for the remaining working years of his life.
    In Jun 1869, Joseph became sole owner of the coal mine.
    Joseph had a 7 acre vineyard, which one year produced 4 thousand gallons of wine.
    On 8 Jun 1870, the census shows Joseph (50) and Catharina (55) HANKE, living in Trenton, Clinton County, Illinois. He was said to have been born in Austria and she in Switzerland. Living with them were Ferdinand HANKE age 40, Frank HANKE age 30, Joseph HANKE age 19, Emile SCHAEFFER age 18. All were said to have been born in Austria except Catharina and Emile, who were said to have been born in Switzerland. Joseph’s real estate value was $33,000.00. His personal property valued at $3,000.00.
    In 1874, Joseph was elected, as a Republican, to the board of supervisors for Sugar Creek Township and held that office for several years.
    In 1875, Catherine died.
    In Sep 1877, Joseph married his 2nd wife Elizabeth.
    On 30 Jun 1880, the census shows Joseph (60) and Elizabeth (21) HANKE, living in Trenton, Clinton County, Illinois. He and his parents were said to have been born in Germany. She was said to have been born in Illinois and her parents in Germany. Joseph was a merchant. With them were their children: Julius E. HANKE age 1 and Emma L. HANKE age 1 month. Also living with them was Ferdinand HANKE age 50, brother of Joseph. Also living with them were servants Edward ROESE and Dorris WILHEMINI, both age 20. Joseph also had 9 boarders living there. Most of whom were coal miners, probably in Joseph’s coal mine. One was a music teacher and one was a railroader.
    On 11 Jun 1900, the census shows Joseph (80) and Elizabeth (41) HANKE, living in Trenton, Sugar Creek Township, Clinton County, Illinois. Joseph was said to have been born 30 Jan 1820, Germany and his parents were said to have been born in Germany. Elizabeth was said to have been born 24 Jan 1859, Missouri; and her parents were said to have been born in Germany. Joseph was County Judge. They owned their home with a mortgage. Elizabeth was said to have given birth to 8 children with 7 living. With them were children: Erwin age 21, born 21 Jul 1878, IL; Emma age 20, born 10 Jun 1880, IL; Herman age 17, born 22 Sep 1882, IL; Adolph age 16, born 21 Mar 1884, IL; Hugo age 13, born 18 Jan 1889, IL; Robert age 11, born 2 Mar 1889, IL; and Milton age 4, born 25 Dec 1895, IL.
    In 1901, Joseph wrote a letter to his nephew, Julius MERTEN of Shattuc. It was dated 28 May 1901. Joseph’s address was Joseph Hanke, Dealer in General Merchandise, Trenton, Illinois. Letter follows: “Dear Nephew, Last sunday 26th, I received a message from Wm. Kalt, son of Joseph and Anna Kalt St. Louis, Mo. informing me his mother had died, she being a sister of your mother, Agnes Burda ___?___, Frank Hanke in Germany, as well as to myself, requesting me to come to St. Louis as soon as possible, but failing to give any other information. In a notice in yesterdays Post Dispatch I found however she died sunday morning 4 o’clock and will be buried at 2:30 today, being 71 years 9 months old, from her late residence 6333 Bulmer Ave. Besides her husband, she leaves William, Anna and Katharine, her children to mourn her loss. She has been sick in bed a considerable length of time, and death was a relief to her. Owing to a sore foot and other causes I was unable to go to funeral, but have informed all relatives in my reach. Please inform your parents and oblige. Yours truly Your uncle Joseph Hanke.”
    On 20 Apr 1910, the census shows Elizabeth HANKE age 51 living in Trenton, Clinton County, Illinois. She was said to have been born in Missouri, and her parents in Germany. She was living off of her own income. Elizabeth was said to have given birth to 7 children with 7 living. With her were her sons: Hermann HANKE age 25; and Adolph HANKE age 25. Both said to have been born in Illinois, their father in Bohemia and their mother in Missouri. Hermann was a laborer of odd jobs. Adolph was a Husckster.
    On 14 Jan 1920, the census shows the widowed Elizabeth HANKE age 61, living at 2831 Lafayette Avenue, St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri. She was said to have been born in Missouri, her father in Carlsbad, Germany and her mother in Baden, Germany. She was renting her home. With her were her children: Edwin J. HANKE age 42; Emma L. HANKE age 40; and Milton C. HANKE age 24. All born in Illinois and their father said to have been born in Bohemia and mother in Missouri. Edwin was an Auditor for a seed company. Emma was a Stenographer for an Exchange. Milton was a clerk for the telephone company.

    In Dec 1934, The Chanute Tribune has, "MRS. H. V. HANKE, 50, DEAD - Benedict Woman Had Been Ill for Several Months - Mrs. Minnie LOEBEL HANKE, 50, died at her home near here Thursday afternoon after an illness of several months. She was a former resident of Thayer and Cherryvale and had lived in Benedict the last ten years. Funeral services will be held at High Prairie Methodist Church at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon with Rev. E. K. Wrestler in charge. Burial will be in Thayer cemetery. Mrs. HANKE was born in Trenton, Illinois February 2, 1884 and married in Independence December 24, 1914 to H. V. HANKE. Her parents were said to have been born in Austria. With them were their children: Wm KALT age 16, born Illinois; Kate KALT age 18, born Illinois; and Anna KALT age 12, born Missouri. William worked at a rope factory.
    On 8 Jun 1900, the census shows Joseph (75) and Anna (69) KALT living in St. Louis, Missouri. Joseph was born Feb 1825, Germany. Anna was born Aug 1829, Germany. Their parents were said to have been born in Germany. Joseph was a day laborer. Anna came to America in 1854. They were renting their home. Anna had given birth to 6 children with 3 living. With them were their children: James KALT age 33, born Apr 1867, Missouri; George KALT age 29, born Jan 1871, Missouri and Mary KALT age 25, born May 1875, Missouri. James and George were day laborers. Mary was a seamstress. (Note: I don't know if this is the right family or not as the children just don't fit.)
    According to Anna's obituary, she had 3 children at the time of her death. They were William, Kate and Anna. I don't understand the James, Geoge and Mary in the 1900 census.

    On 5 Jun 1900, the census shows William (36) and Anna (27) KALT living 2321 Pope Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri. He was said to have been born Apr 1864, Missouri and his parents in Germany. Anna was said to have been born Mar 1873, Missouri and her parents in Ireland. He was a plasterer. They were renting their home. They were said to have been married 5 years. She had given birth to 5 children with 4 living. With them were their children: Anna age 6, born Mar 1894, MO; Willie KALT age 6, born Aug 1896, MO; Joseph KALT age 6, born Nov 1898, MO; and Katie KALT age 0 months, born May 1900, Missouri. (Note: ancestry.com has the name listed as KALL, but you can see that it is KALT on the census record.)
    On 20 Apr 1910, the census shows the widowed Annie KALT age 35 living at 2537 Robin Avenue, St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri. Annie was said to have been born in Missouri and her parents in Ireland. She was said to have had 5 children with 5 living. With her were her children: Annie KALT age 15; Willie KALT age 14; Joe KALT age 11; Bessie KALT age 8; and John KALT age 7. All born in Missouri. Willie and Joe were news boys.
    On 20 Jan 1920, the census shows the widowed Annie KALT age 44 living at 4533 Ruskin Avenue, St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri. She was said to have been born in Missouri and her parents in Ireland. She was a Jantress at a public school. With her were her children: Anna KALT age 24; William KALT age 23; Joseph KALT age 21; Bessie KALT age 18; and John KALT age 16. All born in Missouri. William was a laborer for a Motor Manufacturer Company. Joseph was a teamster at a coal company. John was a grocery clerk.
    On 23 Apr 1930, the census shows the widowed Annie KALT age 54 living at 4534 Arlington Avenue, St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri. She was said to have been born in Missouri. She was renting at $45 a month. With here were her children: William KALT age 30; Joe KALT age 27; and Johnie KALT age 24. William and Johnie were laborers. Also with them was Annie's brother, Tom GAVAN age 29, born Missouri. He was a Plasterer.
    On 2 Apr 1940, the census shows the widowed Anna KALT age 68 living at 4967 Arlington, St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri. She was said to have been living in the same place in 1935. Anna was said to have been born in Missouri. She was renting her home at $25 a month. She had an 8th grade education. With her were her children: William KALT age 41, born MO, 8th grade education; Joseph KALT age 39, born MO, Laborer at the Fruit Auction, 8th grade education; John KALT age 35, born MO, Truck Driver, 8th grade education; Anna KALT age 42, born MO, 8th grade education; and Elizabeth KALT age 37, born MO, 8th grade education.

    At time of his death, he was a Coal Retail owner. He never married.

Lot 1063, Section 23, Interment #266720. Joseph married Celeste Sarah MENEFEE 1924. She was born 25 Jan 1905, St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri, daughter of Edward and Ester (TINDALL) MENEFEE. Celeste died 10 Nov 1931, St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri. Burial 13 Nov 1931, Memorial Park Cemetery. On 12 Sep 1918, Joseph's World War I Draft Registration Card has, Joseph Leo KALT age 19, born 20 Nov 1898. He was living at 4909 Geraldine Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri. Joseph was short and stout with brown eyes and black hair. At time of death he was said to have been a Maintenance Man at the Ball Park. Joe and Celeste had a daughter.

    John married Helen Jane ___?___ .(Note: There was a Helen KALT who was the informant on the death record of Charles BREIDING. It doesn't list how she is related. I don't know if this is the same Helen.)
    In 1952, at time of John's death, they were living at 5051 Union Blvd, St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri. He was a truck driver for a concrete business.
